  • S104 underway two TMA’s down

Well S104 Exploring science is underway. So far covered Global Warming, Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Geology (had to examine some rocks that were provided with a magnifying glass to see what makes them up), and the make up of the earth. TMA02 was submitted yesterday. So far have TMA 01 result of 78%, ICMA 1 of 87% and ICMA 2 97%. Now onto light and energy which seems a lot more interesting. The Two books i have studied so far have covered some simpler equations and maths and some scientific writing which I found a bit of a challenge knowing what they want you to write. Tutor has been great so far and the feedback from TMA 01 definatly helped me with TMA 02 I think.

  • Picture Scaling Tutorial

Hi all well a friend of mine was struggling with sending some very big pictures her camera had taken. Because of the increase in pixel size of cameras the files sizes have increased as well. A JPEG photo on a DSLR camera can be around 6mb to 10mb in size with the CR2 version of a picture being around 18 - 20mb in size. Now if you wanted to send these across the net in an e-mail your going to struggle and even uploading to a site like flicker can take some time. You could try zipping a file but zips are not really designed for photos as the way things are zipped is mainly optimized for programs and text based files. So how do we get a round this problem.

Well lets take this example.  I'm going to show you the original photo in JPEG format that is  4147 x 2765 pixels in resolution. Now compare this to my monitor resolution which for my 24 inch monitor is 1920 x 1200 pixels, and a 1080 HD tv is 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. As you can see unless you are planning on sticking a massive big poster on your wall or maybe showing it on a big screen via projector you really do not need the photo to be as big as 4147 x 2765 pixels.

Ok now to start getting this resolution down you need to open a graphics editor (if you don't have one their is a free one at http://www.gimp.org). This procedure is shown in gimp but most graphic editors will work the same way.

First here is a screen shot of the original picture it looks a good size on the screen but this is because the viewer has scaled it down for display but the picture is still at original resolution. Please notice in bottom left corner of the image next to pixels and where the cursor is pointing it says 8.2mb this is the size of the photo currently not so good for e-mailing and may take a while to upload to flicker or facebook.

Next we open it up in Gimp. and I have zoomed in to 100% using the box in the lower left hand corner. Now you can see how big this photo actually is.

Next we select Scale Image From the Image Menu.

Then in the picture below you will see two numbers under image size. width and height we are going to change these to make them smaller.

I have now changed these numbers from width 4147 to 1076 this will then automatically scale the height down as well to keep the original ratio the same.

In the picture below I have selected percentage instead of pixels this may be easier than choosing the pixel size you can then reduce by a percentage instead.

I am now choosing save as from the file menu.

Name your file and make sure you select JPEG Image as your file type when saving for smaller file and then when it asks you for quality setting choose 100%.

This is the final Picture at full size after scaling. Please notice in the bottom left corner of the picture next to word pixels it shows 662.0kb we have now reduced a 8.2meg file down to just over 0.6mb. Your picture is now ready for e-mailing or uploading.

  • S154 First Module Completed

Well S154 Water for life module is now complete and pending official notification i have managed to get a mark of 86% in the module, which i am well happy with. The module its self was pretty straight forward and a nice gentle introduction into studying at the OU, maths and scientific notation. Luckily thanks to modern technology we were able to have a unofficial Face book page setup for everyone to have discussions and help each other out. The book itself explained things relatively well but i did need to use you tube and Google a few times to get my head around some of the items as they were not very well described. the main things we learnt were , balancing equations, refresher on basic maths which progressed to a little more complicated maths, how to carry out and write up experiments, and writing in scientific notation. All in all a good course next up is S104 exploring science.

Unlike S154 which only had 1 book, 2 Tutor Marked assignments and 2 interactive ones, S104 has  8 books, 7 Tutor Marked, 7 interactive ones and a End of module assignment. This is going to be a lot of work spread out over 9 months but it is worth 60 credits.

    Subjects covered in s104 are:

Book 1:  Global Warming, Book 2: Earth and Space, Book 3: Energy and Light, Book4: The right Chemistry, Book 5: Life, Book 6: Exploring Earth's History, Book7: Quarks and Quasars, Book 8: Life in the universe

  • Open University S154 Study Diary Entry 3

Well so far so good, I have completed my potato experiment to see how much water is in a average potato. Comparing to other peoples results mine doesn't look so accurate which is a little concerning, not sure if I didn't do the experiment long enough or whether it was the type of potato I used. I have submitted my first ICMA (10 questions done online) and I am now looking at completing the first tutor marked assignment. Have had the week off so this has helped with getting some good study in. So far this course has been relatively easy refresher on general maths i.e.( fractions, ratios, percentages and how to create tables and graphs and read the information presented). As this is a 10 credit course its not to intense and doesn't take to much of your time up. So yep course is going well

  • Open University S154 Study Diary Entry 2

Today I have worked through to Chapter 2 Question 2.8 Of the Water for Life book From the Open university. I am going to endeavour to finish Chapter 2 Tonight. I found the Chapter interesting and it did explain the importance of collecting and collating evidence which I now know to be Scientific Theory, and how this can be used to create a hypothisis. these two terms don't have to just relate to science you can use them in everyday life as well. Only problem I had was not reading one of the questions properly and nearly answering wrong, I must take more care / trouble reading questions before answering.

The Maths was quiet straight forward and I found this not to be too much of a problem in this chapter.

Overall the first few chapters seem to be used mainly to get you in the right frame of mind to progress on with the course in the right way and future courses.

I am very happy with my progress so far

  • Open University S154 Study Diary

Today I have had a look at the water for life book as part of my course and have purchased pencils , a geometry set , notebook, box folder and calculator in order to prepare myself for my studies.

I have had my room re-decorated and made a new desk to give me a fresh study area where i can study with out interruptions. I have been browsing the forums and tutor group and making contacts over the last few days in preparation for the start date of my course.

I have signed up to Face book unofficial group for s154.

I still have to purchase a new chair and finish my desk off.

Looking forward to the start of my course if a little apprehensive.

  • E-Book Review : Algebra 1 for Dummies + Workbook

Hi all well I was so impressed with the content of this item that I decided to write a review regarding it. Algebra 1 for Dummies and its Workbook companion which had to be purchased separate is a very good book for people who maybe for various reasons never got to grips with algebra. This could be because at school their were more important things to worry about than learning, or maybe you just could not get your head around the subject. (more...)

  • Registered for first course at Open University

Well I have started on the road of education by registering for S154 Science starts here. Should be starting in october and will give a review once I start it. Also just been reading algebra for Dummies and completing the workbook really enjoying learning maths much easier than when I was at school :)

  • Open University Degree in Natural Science / Astronomy and Planetary Science

Well I have decided I need a more formal qualification and have decided to attempt a degree in Natural Science / Astronomy and Planetary Science. Going to do it via the Open University and looking forward to it as well as aprehensive due to work that is involved.

I will keep you all updated on my progress and how I am finding each module. Have to start now as if I start before september 2012 I miss the new fee system which would mean paying £15000 for the degree instead of current £4800 plus need to finish by 2017 or I get put onto the new fee system. Anyone else doing this course or done it advice or your own experiences would be appreciated. Modules im planning are
